Op dit moment is op de radio de presentatie van de 3voor12 Song van het Jaar. Ondanks de vaak wat obligate oververtegenwoordiging van het Neerlands product, is het meestal best een aardige lijst. Zojuist bijvoorbeeld o.a. Lemon Glow van Beach House en Danny Nedelko van IDLES.
Vorig jaar won Everything Now van Arcade Fire. Dat was in mijn ogen een zeer terechte winnaar. Ondanks dat het opvallend genoeg geen echte hit werd, is er zelden een nummer van een indieband geweest dat zo breed gedragen werd als Everything Now vorig jaar. Je hoefde op Best Kept Secret maar die eerste tonen in te zetten en iedereen zong uit volle borst mee.
Everything Now heeft een opvallende panfluit-sample. Die is afkomstig uit het nummer Coffee Cola Song van de Kameroense omni-artiest Francis Bebey, een opvallend nummer dat een schertsende tendens aanneemt tegen de overheersende westerse cultuur. Het grappige hieraan is dat een vriend van mij, 2 weken voordat Everything Now uitkwam, in onze gezamenlijke WhatsApp-groep aan het 'klagen' was dat ik de hele tijd met van die obscure Afrikaanse muziek aankwam, zoals bijvoorbeeld dat nummer over koffie en cola.... Een kleine maand later stond ik met hem vooraan bij Arcade Fire op BKS toen ze dit nummer speelden
(Overigens leende Bebey de panfluit ook weer van een traditioneel Pygmees liefdesliedje...)
