1984, het jaar van de M(etal)! Mijn Top 8 zijn allemaal dikke 5*-albums en bestaat uit zeven M-bands: Metal Church, Maiden, Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Marillion en twee keer Manowar. Alleen Queensrÿche is de alfabetische dissonant. Heel lang getwijfeld welke ik bovenaan zou zetten, maar uiteindelijk heeft Maiden - de band die ik van 1980 t/m 1983 steevast op de eerste plek zette - uitgerekend met hun beste studioalbum toch genoegen moeten nemen met een tweede plek. De A-kant van Metal Church's debuut is de allerindrukwekkendste A-kant in de metalgeschiedenis. 21 minuten ultieme metalperfectie.

Enfin, allemaal parels voor de zwijnen, want met uitzondering van Metallica en de enige nonmetalband in het rijtje, hadden jullie er geen boodschap aan.

1984 was ook het jaar dat ik mijn allereerste voorbespeelde cassette kocht: Bryan Adams. Niet vreemd dus dat zijn album terug te vinden is in mijn lijst. Wel vreemd/typerend dat het hardste nummer van dat album, de gave afsluiter ‘Ain't Gonna Cry’, het minst populair is op MM. En in 1985 kocht ik mijn eerste lp’s en een daarvan was ‘N.E.W.S.’, vooral omdat het in de uitverkoopbakken van de V&D lag: slechts een luttele ƒ9,95. Dat bleek geen mission impossible voor mijn zuurverdiende zakgeld. Een extreem hoge jeugdsentimentbonus voor deze twee albums derhalve.

Daarbij bleek 1984 ook het gouden jaar voor Wim T. Schippers. Niet alleen was er toen op de TV zijn hilarische serie ‘Op Zoek Naar Jolanda’ én startte hij het allerbeste, -idiootste, -ontregelendste, -kolderiekste en -geweldigste radioshow ‘Ronflonflon met Jacques Plafond’, hij bracht samen met Paul Haenen ook nog eens de twee allerlolligste kinderplaten aller tijden uit. Wat een mindblowing creativiteit! De Leonardo da Vinci van de Nederlandse cultuur, om het maar eens bescheiden te formuleren.
