Deze dame komt uit 1941, maar is nog steeds actief. Ze heeft een uitgebreide carrière gehad, al kun je het beter een 'manier van leven' noemen dan een carrière. Ze is docente, stemcoach, voorvechter voor vrouwenrechten, ze werkt in de jeugdhulpverlening en is zangeres.

Wij gaan luisteren naar de titeltrack van haar debuutalbum en dompelen ons vandaag onder in de folk lifestyle.

Gezongen bij een knapperend kampvuurtje in het donker in the middle of nowhere zal dit ongetwijfeld kippenvel bezorgen.

Ik hoop voor je dat deze keer je trip naar Ecuador succesvoller en vooral droger is geweest dan je vorige tour de force, Shaky.

Nouja zeg, waarom ken ik deze Frankie niet? Ik dompel me zo af en toe toch behoorlijk onder in de folk, maar haar naam heeft mijn pad nimmer gekruist. En dat terwijl ze een hele rits platen heeft uitgebracht, ook nog eentje samen met Anne Briggs zie ik nu ('The Bird in the Bush', 1966).

Ah, ik zie het al. Weinig en niet al te hoge ratings op RYM, hier op MuMe ontbreken zelfs bijna al haar albums, weinig heruitgaven van haar albums (soms heeft een plaat zelfs nooit een reissue gehad!) én toch betaalbaar op Discogs. Kortom: onbekend maakt weinig bemind. Dat is deels ook te zien aan bovenstaande cijfers. Dit album is zelfs het enige van haar vijf 70s albums dat ooit een keer op cd is uitgebracht, maar dan moet je 'em nog uit Japan halen ook.
Tsja, niet iedereen is zo bekend als Shirley Collins of June Tabor.

Spijtig voor Frankie, want deze ruim twee minuten oerbritse folk is zeer smaakvol. Een jaar eerder is deze traditional ook nog uitgevoerd door Steeleye Span die behoorlijk anders klinkt (en ook wel mijn voorkeur geniet).

Good to be back! Maar ook helemaal niet zo good to be back. De mensen die het topic '3 fijne gebeurtenissen' volgen hebben waarschijnlijk mijn reden tot reizen al gelezen.

Hoe dan ook, voorlopig weer terug in Nederland dus kan ik me weer bezighouden met dit bijzonder fijne topic.

Hoewel ik het topic super vind, heb ik niet al teveel met dit soort folk. Een minimale voldoende kan ik er nog wel aan kwijt: 5,5

302. Kathy Kirby - Golden Days (1967)

Dit was het b-kantje voor Turn Around, maar beide songs deden niets in de hitlijst voor deze dame die vooral bekend is van haar versie van Secret Love en voor haar succesvolle deelname aan het Eurovisie Songfestival. Kirby heeft een aantal hits gescoord in de UK, maar had een tragisch leven. Ze was schizofreen en dit overheerste haar hele leven.

Deze week concentreren wij ons dus op Carole King in de terugkerende themaweek van succesvolle singer-songwriters. Met 61 hits op haar naam in de UK als songwriter, was zij tussen 1962 en 2005 de succesvolste vrouwelijke songwriter in de UK. Veel van de songs die hits werden voor anderen schreef ze samen met haar eerste man Gerry Goffin. Dit nummer voor Kirby werd geschreven door King, Goffin en een andere zeer succesvolle songwriter: Howard Greenfield.

Ik heb dan weer niet al te veel met Carole.
Al kan ik haar jaren 60-composities over het algemeen iets beter hebben dan haar (eigen) 70s werk.
Kathy en het liedje zijn mij wat te gelikt en te braaf, maar ik kan er wel naar luisteren en ze heeft een prettige stem.

Met die strijkers en dat koor zou ik dit eerder in de eerste helft van de sixties hebben gesitueerd, maar vooruit, ik geef een "middelbare-schoolse voldoende": 5,5. (In mijn jeugd zou dat gewoon een ónvoldoende zijn geweest, maar dat was dan ook in de eerste helft van mijn leven.)
