Het klassement is hierboven geplaatst. 502 songs al, lekker hoor. Fijn dat er nog steeds een clubje meeluistert en stemt. Mijn dank is groot want wat mij betreft gaan we onze klassiekers nooit vergeten.

Terug in Nederland en we gaan meteen een themaweek doen! Deze week focussen we ons op artiesten waar we allemaal "dat ene nummer" van kennen, maar wat hebben ze eigenlijk nog meer gemaakt? Het kan zijn dat deze one-hit-wonders in kleinere landen of kleinere charts nog hits hebben gescoord, maar ik ga bij deze week uit van de "grote charts".





503. Zager & Evans - Taxi Man (1969)



In the Year 2525 was zo'n ongelooflijk grote hit dat dit zowel een vloek als een zege bleek te zijn voor Denny Zager en Rick Evans. Van de ene kant hadden ze een hit te pakken die zo iconisch bleek te zijn dat deze zelfs op de dag van vandaag nog enorm relevant is, van de andere kant wilde men meer van dat en dan precies dat. Dat kan natuurlijk niet, dus eigenlijk waren al hun follow-up singles bij voorbaat al ten dode opgeschreven. Dat pakte ook echt zo uit; na die wereldwijde nummer 1-hit kwam hun follow-up single niet eens tot  de Billboard Hot 100 en bleef steken op plek 106. Alleen in Canada wist het nog een 41e plek te scoren, maar dat is natuurlijk ook niet te vergelijken met het succes van 2525.

Rick schreef vrijwel elk nummer van het duo en zo ook Taxi Man; een song die te vinden is op het Zager & Evans debuutalbum Zager & Evans - 2525 (Exordium & Terminus) (1969). Dit album namen ze op voor RCA Victor. Het album bereikte de 30e plek in de album chart en bevatte 2525. Toch stapten de mannen na dit album over op White Whale Records (vooral bekend dankzij The Turtles), maar dat betekende eigenlijk meteen het einde van al hun successen. Er werden geen hits meer gescoord, ook hun albums bereikten geen hitlijst meer en het duo hield het in 1971/1972 voor gezien.

Taxi Man van DITZ was één van mijn grote hits van 2025. Maar helaas voor Zager & Evans heeft dat behalve de titel niets met hun nummer te doen. Ten onrechte vaak genoemd als één van de meest duidelijke voorbeelden van een one-hit-wonder, maar zelfs dat lukte ze in Nederland niet. Hun Cary Lynn James haalde hier de Top 40 ook nog met een 30e plaats. Die opvolger is al niet zo heel denderend en ook deze toeterende Taxi Man doet het niet voor mij: 4,8

504. Apollo 100 - Classical Wind (1971)




Apollo 100 was een muziekgroep uit Engeland die nieuwere, poppy versies maakte van klassieke werken. Hun grote hit was Joy, gebaseerd op Jesus bleibet meine Freude BWV 147 (of misschien dat je dat stuk beter kent als Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring) van Bach.

De band draaide om Tom Parker, een arrangeur en multi-instrumentalist die onder andere keyboard, klarinet, saxofoon, trombone en trompet speelde. In 1971 zocht hij een groep muzikanten bij elkaar en hij vormde Apollo 100. Binnen no-time hadden ze allerlei klassieke stukken en klassiekers uit de popmuziek omgevormd tot hun eigen varianten en met Joy hadden ze een schot in de roos te pakken; een dikke hit in de US en UK. Daarna was het in 1 klap volledig voorbij; ze wisten geen enkele keer de Billboard of UK chart meer te halen en in 1973 viel de band al uit elkaar. 

Nederland was de grote uitzondering; hier was niet Joy, maar de Apollo 100 versie van Besame Mucho de grootste hit. Joy haalde wel ook de Top 40. Dus net als gisteren; een one-hit-wonder in de grote charts die alleen in Nederland nog een extra hitje wist te scoren. 

Was die Tom Parker niet even helemaal terug in de jaren 80? Met van die TV-LP's en zo? Check inderdaad hij is blijven hangen met New London Chorale en Vicki Brown. Vreselijk muziek. Ik zei het Top 40 topic dat klassieke muziek niet heilig is, maar dit vind ik wel een beetje erg bloedeloos. Dan toch liever onze eigen Ekseption: 3

Apollo 100 - Classical Wind :
De albums van Apollo 100 kom je regelmatig tegen in de euro-bakken van kringlopen en rommelmarkten.
Zijn er dus blijkbaar aardig wat van verkocht destijds.

Wat de muziek betreft: Kitscherig en smakeloos ? Misschien.
Ondanks dat vind ik het toch wel wat hebben. En bovendien uitstekend geproduceerd.
Prima muziek om je stereo-installatie mee te testen ook. 7

504. Apollo 100 - Classical Wind (1971) : 6

Ik zou het met alle liefde willen haten, want het idee om klassieke stukken om te schrijven naar popmuziek is wel heel erg. Toch als ik het nummer gewoon beluister zonder erbij na te denken wat ze aan het doen zijn, valt het me allemaal reuze mee.

505. Dale Wright - That's My Gal (1959)




Dale Wright begon als radio dj en hij kreeg een platencontract aangeboden toen hij tijdens zijn uitzendingen een liedje zong dat hij zelf had geschreven. Hij bracht heel wat singles uit en wist 1x de top 50 van de US charts te bereiken: She's Neat schopte het in 1958 tot plek 38. Later bereikte hij nog wel een keer een 77e plek, maar hij staat te boek als one-hit-wonder.

Samen met zijn bands The Rock-Its en The Wright Guys was hij een graag geziene gast in de opnamestudio, maar het gebrek aan commercieel succes deed Dale na een paar jaar besluiten om zijn carrière als zanger op te geven. Hij had altijd die liefde voor de radio gevoeld en keerde dan ook meteen weer terug op het bekende nest. Dat was geen slechte keuze want zijn populariteit op de radio groeide alleen maar. Nog ruim 20 jaar zou hij bijzonder succesvol blijven alvorens hij de beslissing maakte een management rol aan te nemen binnen de radiowereld.

Ik vind het wel een grappig plaatje. Beetje novelty. Net een beetje te flauw en te simpel om een classic te zijn: 7,6
