Eerst the Lioness en daarna Coxcomb Red, betere en ontroerende 10 minuten zijn toch zelden op plaat gezet

Ik was een paar jaar geleden op het Haldern festival in Duitsland en daar hadden ze een van de wegen op de camping vernoemd naar Jason Molina. Toen was het festival voor mij al geslaagd

Je zou verwachten: soeverein. Maar zo was het niet helemaal. Eerst zat Grandaddy zeer op de lip, later, toen dit album afhaakte voor te koppositie, kwam Jason Molina het vuur aan de schenen leggen. Maar Radiohead zou Radiohead niet zijn om dit publiek zo in vervoering te brengen dat de eerste plek toch onontkoombaar was.
Het kostte de band drie jaar om tot een opvolger van het immens populaire OK Computer te komen. Het succes was de band niet bevallen, leadzanger Thom Yorke was weer depressief geworden en had moeite met het schrijven van nieuwe songs.
Hij had last van acts die volgens hem Radiohead imiteerden zodat hij zijn muziek ervoer als constant aanwezig als zoals hij het noemde een "fridge buzz". Hij had ook even genoeg van muziekmaken en was negatief en vijandig naar publiek en pers.
Het gevolg was dat hij totaal andere muziek ging opzoeken, om te beluisteren, en kwam uit bij Aphex Twin en Autechre. Yorke:"It was refreshing because the music was all structures and had no human voices in it. But I felt just as emotional about it as I'd ever felt about guitar music."
Ook Selway en Greenwood hadden de behoefte om het anders te doen. Selway: ”I was afraid that the success of OK Computer had turned us into a one-trick band."
Alleen gitarist Ed O'Brien wilde een vierde Radiohead met "snappy", melodische gitaarsongs, maar Yorke maakte duidelijk: "There was no chance of the album sounding like that. I'd completely had it with melody. I just wanted rhythm. All melodies to me were pure embarrassment."
Kid A werd dan ook het begin van een radicale koerswijziging van Radiohead die ook doorwerkte in de latere albums. De muziek is elektronischer, met een toename aan effecten, dissonantie en experiment. Een groot verschil met eerdere platen is dat de nadruk op dit album erg op het arrangement, op de ‘geluiden’ ligt.
Een goed gelukte verschuiving hoor, mooie geluidjes! Maar niks voor zaaf.

Ik heb toch zo'n vermoeden wel dat het in recentere jaren nog iets lastiger wordt om ze alle 10 juist te hebben. Dit omdat de verdeeldheid volgens mij alleen maar verder toeneemt onder ons connaisseurs.
