Startten goed, maar moesten nog wel langs Wire en Talking Heads. Dat lukte uiteindelijk vrij comfortably numb.

Na het tweede album van de groep scheidden de wegen met producer Bernard Rhodes. Hierdoor moesten ze ook een andere plek vinden om hun muziek te maken. Een nieuwe plek werd gevonden: de Vanilla Studios, die achterin een garage was gesitueerd in Pimlico (een wijk in Londen, aan de Theems).
De groep had weliswaar een EP gereleased, Cost Of Living, maar die bestond uit een cover en drie oudere nummers: Jones en Strummer kampten met een writer's block. Dus de groep arriveerden in de nieuwe studio zonder songs.
De band begon met een strakke routine oefensessies te plannen waarin veel nummers uit verschillende windrichtingen gecovered werden, vooral rockabilly-, rhythm and blues- en reggaesongs. Toehoorders werden niet toegestaan, dus de band had de vrijheid om de punkstijl wat los te laten. Dat strakke schema, waarin ook ruimte zat voor ontspanning (voetbal en een biertje na afloop!) maakte de onderlinge vriendschap sterker.
Het zelfvertrouwen groeide, de band was vooral verrukt van de drumskills van Topper Headon, wat nog meer het gevoel gaf dat ze van alles konden spelen. De nummers ontstonden vervolgens vlotjes.
Tot sterk ongenoegen van CBS Records had The Clash aan Guy Stevens gevraagd hun volgende plaat te producen. Guy had wat alcohol- en drugissues en had de neiging om de studio te bezaaien met rotzooi en omvergesmeten meubilair om een rock & roll atmosfeer te creëren. The Clash, met name Paul Simonon, konden prima met Guy en zo werden de songs meestal in één of twee takes opgenomen.

Ook in die inmiddels beruchte top 10 te vinden. Met wisselende voorkeuren een plaat die me blijft bekoren. Energiek, breed, losjes, in your face, lekker hoor!

Terechte top twee die vrij ver boven de rest uitsteekt. Is er volgende week zo'n decennium lijstje? Dan speel ik misschien ook weer eens mee.

De beste niet-punkplaat door een punkband ooit gemaakt

Oeh... die van '80 geniet mijn voorkeur...

Goede plaat van the Clash: ik had 'm op 13. Maar nummers 4 en 3 Wire & the Talking Heads zijn naar mijn idee echt beter.

Klein aanloopje en vanaf maandag stevig in het zadel. Als Curtis dat had kunnen voorzien…

De groep werd eind 1976 opgericht in Manchester. In eerste instantie heette hij Warsaw (na heel kort Stiff Kittens genoemd te zijn op wat flyers). Warsaw was gekozen met in gedachten de titel van het nummer Warszawa, van Bowie's Low. Eind 1977 veranderde de band zijn naam om verwarring te voorkomen met de groep Warsaw Pakt. De nieuwe naam 'Joy Division' kwam uit het boek The House of Dolls van Karol Cetinsky en verwijst naar een plaats in nazi-concentratiekampen waar de gevangenen zich moesten prostitueren voor de machthebbers.
De band maakte indruk op Rob Gretton en televisiepresentator Tony Wilson (die juist Factory Records hadden opgericht) en mocht een album opnemen dat door Wilson uit eigen zak werd betaald.
Dit werd Unknown Pleasures en maakte indruk. Joy Division kreeg predicaten als 'gotische dansmuziek' en 'neanderthalerrock' opgeplakt.
Het atmosferische geluid van Unknown Pleasures was, behalve aan het minimalistische spel van de bandleden, in belangrijke mate te danken aan de manier waarop producer Martin Hannett de muziek vastlegde. In de punktijd werden platen doorgaans met weinig opsmuk opgenomen, maar Hannett trok op Unknown Pleasures een heel register aan galm en andere vervormingen open, met een vervreemdend effect als gevolg. Pogingen van bandleden om een mening over het bandgeluid naar voren te brengen, werden door Hannett met scheldpartijen beantwoord. Ook de typische teksten van Ian Curtis, waarin verval, angst, woede en eenzaamheid terugkerende thema's zijn, worden kenmerkend voor de band.

Al vele jaren een plaat waar ik het moeilijk mee heb. Is het teveel van het goede? Is het de lading? De productie? Ik kan m zat geraken. Terwijl ik m ook bewonder en met mijn instemming op mijn nummer 10 plaatste. De laatste tijd gaat het dan ook wat beter tussen mij en Joy Division.

Vol afwisseling en gretigheid dit London Calling.
Dappere plaat en het definitieve bewijs dat deze gasten echt goed konden spelen.
Drumpartijen zijn zoals zaaf als aangaaf, heel goed. Topper was echt all-round.
Zoals veel dubbelalbums toch niet alles even boeiend voor mijn gevoel. Nooit onacceptabel, maar zeker wat fillers, naast fantastisch werk trouwens.
Op basis daarvan, op 14 in mijn lijst.

Unknown Pleasures e moi: het zijn nooit vrienden geworden. De opvolger vind ik daarentegen wel een goede plaat. Maar ook niet meer dan dat. Geef mij maar het vervolg in de jaren '80, met name de meest verkochte 12 inch ooit, die ik nog eens draai op een blauwe maandag.

De enige logische winnaar van dit jaar.
