Siouxie heb ik ook door deze week meer op waarde geschat. Fijn om weer te draaien. Swell Maps vind ik ook een goede plaat. This Heat heb ik zeer lang niet gehoord, mss morgen langs laten komen.

Muzikaal hebben ze in deze periode beide erg veel inhoud. Dat zou zo rond 1985 wel veranderen overigens. Iets met music for the masses al is dit weer van iemand anders

Maar goed. Derde is een prachtig resultaat voor de beste plaat allertijden als Marillion niet had bestaan

2. The Cure - Faith

Zeer spannend was het lange tijd tussen de nummers 1 en 2. The Cure had de eerste helft het voordeel van meer genoemd tegenover hogere posities voor de uiteindelijke winnaar. Maar ook het aantal nominaties werd door laatstgenoemde in zijn voordeel omgebogen, dus Faith op 2.

Na de Seventeen Seconds toer begon the Cure september 1980 in Morgan Studios, zonder Hartley (ruzie met de andere leden), met het opnemen van hun nieuwe plaat. Onder andere Primary en All Cats Are Grey werden uitgeprobeerd maar, zoals Robert Smith verklaarde, waar hij hoopte op iets sombers werd het gewoon saai.
Andere studio's werden geprobeerd: Red Bus, Trident, The Roundhouse en Abbey Road. En gaandeweg werd de stemming in de groep ook echt depressief, wat maakte dat de resultaten authentieker werden en naar Smith's smaak beter. Terug in de Morgan Studios werd het zaakje geklaard.

De boekenserie van Mervyn Peake, Gormenghast, inspireerde met name The Drowning Man en All Cats Are Grey, met op laatstgenoemd nummer geen gitaar maar Robert Smith op keyboard en piano.
Op de release op cassette staat ook Carnage Visors (een antoniem voor een roze bril), de soundtrack voor een korte film van de hand van Ric Gallup, de broer van Simon, die als voorprogramma werd getoond tijdens de Faith toer. Die film is verdwenen, alleen de groepsleden hebben hun kopie nog.

Zeer mooie plaat. Onder vergelijkbare omstandigheden af te luisteren als hun voorganger. Ik waardeer ze bijna evenveel.

Bij mij op 4, en de nummer 1 op 2.

Ik heb hiervan de luxe 2cd editie en dus ook Carnage Visors. Gelukkig maar want dat is voor mij hun beste liedje

Mooie plaat, al vind ik Seventeen Seconds sterker. Deze net geen top 10.

Ik vind deze juist veel beter dan Seventeen Seconds. Die viel bij mij buiten de top 20, deze heeft mijn top 10 gehaald (6 geloof ik uit mijn hoofd). Mooi geheel. Soms luister ik het prachtige Carnage Visors er ook achteraan, dan is het dubbel genieten.

Dus toch André Hazes op 1, Poeha!

Zoals geschreven, het was een lange tijd spannend, maar het verschil is uiteindelijk zeer helder geworden. En weer scoort mijn nummer 1 nummer 1! Die cursus VBA was niet voor niks.

Schrijven over From The Lions Mouth is schrijven over 'waarom niet?'
Het prototype van miskend talent. Of misschien beter: waarom niet toen? Want: hier verdorie 1e!

Adrian Borland leed aan een schizoaffectieve stoornis. En raakte met de jaren sterker gefrustreerd: de doelen die hij nastreefde in zijn persoonlijke leven waren klaarblijkelijk niet haalbaar voor hem. En zijn zegje over de wereld om hem heen werd maar mondjesmaat beluisterd.

En verdorie, degenen die wel luisterden staken hem enorme pluimen in zijn kont, maar hij bleef zich voelen als een roepende in de woestijn. Met een mooie boodschap, dat wel.
Adrian, en zijn band The Sound, was in de lage landen relatief populair. Optredend, hier, behandeld als een rock-god, was hij waarschijnlijk zo gelukkig als een gekwelde ziel kan zijn.
Was het de tijd? Post-punk vervaagde op de kaart en synthpop nam de prominente plek in het muzikale landschap in. De oudere geesten als Lou, Iggy en Patti raakten uit de gratie ten faveure van frisse koppies als die van Ian McCullough, Jim Kerr en Bono. En Borland hoorde eerder bij de eerste groep dan bij de tweede.
"Everything I touch turns to dust", luidt de track Contact The Fact, "and everyone I turn to turns on me".

Ondanks het lichtelijk klagende wat Adrian had, en het norse in real-life, heeft zijn dood in '99 me veel pijn gedaan. En nog. Ik heb The Sound live veelvuldig gezien, heb Borland in de jaren '90 een paar keer zeer kort gesproken en hoe korzelig hij ook was - en hoe beschonken - het voelde als een vriendschap. Niet in de laatste plaats door deze plaat. Die mooie boodschap.
