En Echo stond dus al snel op 2 maar had dit jaar de grootste fanbase en werd dus in the end top in 1984. Onvermijdelijk.

Porcupine was niet zo goed ontvangen, waarop de groep de single Never Stop opnam met Hugh Jones, die het 2e album Heaven Up Here met de groep had gemaakt. De single introduceerde een uitgebreider arrangement dan de groep gewend was, inclusief conga's, marimba's, violen en cello's.

Na in Liverpool aan het schrijven geweest te zijn voor hun nieuwe plaat, nam de groep hun zesde 'Peel session' voor de BBC op op 6 September 1983. De opgenomen nummers waren Nocturnal Me, Ocean Rain, My Kingdom en Watch Out Below, nummers die allen verschenen op hun 4e, met laatstgenoemd nummer hertiteld als The Yo Yo Man. De respons op deze sessie was zeer positief.

Eind '83 namen Echo & the Bunnymen een live special op voor The Tube genaamd A Crystal Day. Ze speelden alleen nieuwe nummers: The Killing Moon, Nocturnal Me, Ocean Rain – wat inmiddels een ballad was geworden – en een vroege versie van Thorn of Crowns, getiteld Cucumber.

De nieuwe plaat is grotendeels opgenomen in Les Studios des Dames en Studio Davout in Parijs. Henri Loustau hielp hen met het vastleggen van de vioolarrangementen, gemaakt door violist/pianist Adam Peters. McCullough, die behoorlijk verkouden was in Parijs, heeft de vocalen opnieuw gedaan in Amazon Studio in Liverpool.

Liefde vanaf verschijnen. Prach-ti-ge plaat. Als ie een tijdje uit mijn gezichtveld geraakt ben ik weer erg verguld om hem te hervinden.
