Hoewel nog altijd in de bijna heilige hiphopjaren '90 is 1997 een van mijn minst favoriete jaren. Behoorlijk wat goede albums, maar geen persoonlijke klassiekers. Ik neem het jullie dan ook niet kwalijk dat er geen enkele match is tussen mijn top 15 en de algehele top 15. Al had ik de oude bazen van de Buena Vista Social Club daar wel in verwacht, maar die redden het net niet zag ik.

En ook weer nooit verwacht dat mijn gekscherende grootspraak toch nog voor 3/5 werd ingelost. Met name geweldig dat Godspeed You! Black Emperor zo hoog eindigde. De andere Emperor had evenwel ook wat hoger mogen eindigen.

Want het album van GY!BE is voor mij zo'n plaat waarvan ik de eerste luisterbeurt mijn leven niet meer zal vergeten. Destijds werkend in het muziekarchief van het Nederlands Instituut Voor Beeld & Geluid kwam ik dit album tegen om te documenteren. Het kostte sowieso al even wat tijd om te begrijpen wat de bandnaam nu eigenlijk was, laat staan dat ik snapte wie of wat de albumtitel was.
De donkere, onheilspellende hoes fascineerde zeker, maar ik dacht eigenlijk dat het een soort van experimentele, atonale freejazz/music concrète zou worden oid.

Nou, experimenteel zeker, maar wat kwam het album kei- en keihard bij me binnen. Nog nooit zoiets eerder gehoord. Helemaal overdonderd door de impact van het album aan de praat geraakt met de muziekinkoper van die tijd - sowieso de enige persoon op mijn werk waarmee ik serieus over muziek kon praten, de andere van mijn afdeling snapte totaal niks van mijn smaak en waren overwegend bekend met klassieke muziek, of hooguit popmuziek - en we kwamer erachter dat ze in november (1998) in Paradiso zouden optreden. Met die collega naar Paradiso getogen: het was in mijn herinnering bij lange na niet uitverkocht, we konden makkelijk en met ruimte om ons heen redelijk vooraan staan en ze speelden maar één ellenlang en in elkaar overlopend nummer. Mindblowing ervaring.

Niemand die trouwens Dimmu Borgir en 35007 (en Savatage) hebben genoemd? Niemand? Zelfs Johnny Marr, Lying Mouth en marsupilami niet? Merkwaardige toestanden. Eigenlijk had ik van jou ook wel verwacht dat je 35007 in je lijst had opgenomen, zaaf.
