Nou dat gaat lekker: R.E.M. mijn nummer 8. Mooie plaat!

Er zijn echter recent en de besten komen uit dit jaar eindelijk goede remasters van de mastertapes verschenen. Nu wel met bas! Die Flemming Rasmussen had het werkelijk goed verkloot met zijn matige tot slechte (Justice) producties. Met de nieuwste technieken alsnog rechtgezet, waarbij wel recht wordt gedaan aan het originele wat 'blikken' geluid. De moeite waard dus.

Helemaal goed op vinyl en Japanse Shm CD. Geldt trouwens ook voor Kill 'Em All.

Heb ik zijdelings iets over gehoord. Wie weet duik ik er via die weg weer eens in.

R.E.M. was mijn nummer 2 (op ongeveer gelijke hoogte met mijn nummer 3).

2. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

Strijdde verwoed met onze nummer 1 en ondanks de favorietenrol die men deze plaat toedichtte stond deze geen enkel moment bovenaan. M.a.w. het verschil werd al in het begin gemaakt.

Het album wordt afgetrapt met een sample van het Britse patriottische lied 'Take me back to dear old Blighty', gezongen door actrice Cicely Courtneidge in de film The L-Shaped Room uit 1962.
De teksten van Morrissey zijn weer venijnig als vanouds zoals zijn sneer naar het Britse koningshuis (The Queen Is Dead), zijn platenbaas (Frankly, Mr. Shankly), beschuldigers van plagiaat (Cemetry Gates) en de muziekindustrie (The Boy With The Thorn In His Side). Terugkerende thema's zijn eenzaamheid en sociale misstanden. Het morbide liefdeslied There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is een van de meest gewaardeerde nummers van de groep.

De plaat is geproduceerd door Morrissey en Marr, terzijde gestaan door engineer Stephen Street (die ook geholpen had met Meat Is Murder). Volgens Street waren ze een goed team: "Morrissey, Johnny and I had a really good working relationship – we were all roughly the same age and into the same kind of things, so everyone felt quite relaxed in the studio".
En ook al had de groep moeilijkheden met hun label "this didn't get in the way of recording because the atmosphere in the studio was very, very constructive." (Street)

De backing van Bigmouth van de speed-up stem van Morrissey kwam tot stand door veel experimenteren met het opnemen van zijn stemgeluid en werd ingezet omdat het oorspronkelijke plan, de backing door Kirsty MacColl te laten doen, uiteindelijk werd geschrapt omdat Marr het resultaat veel te weird vond

Weinig miss met deze plaat en veel hit. Dus duidelijk in mijn top 20.

Wooow, Talk Talk op 1! Niet meer dan terecht. En als ik het al zeg .

Talk Talk ...er zal nog lang over worden nagepraat.

Ik vind het niet erg. Ik heb beiden op 3,5* staan, maar gun het Talk Talk meer. Heb deze plaat de laatste tijd veel geluisterd. Vijf jaar geleden kon ik er nog totaal niet naar luisteren, nu is het bijna 4*.

Het is nu wel nog meer jammer dat The Smiths vorig jaar niet hebben gewonnen. En Talk Talk maakt over twee jaar (zeer terecht) weer een hele goede kans.

De glorieuze nummer 1, zoals eerder gezegd: met het hoogste aantal punten tot nu toe.

De enigszins ingezette koerswijziging van Talk Talk krijgt hier een nadrukkelijker vervolg. Met een organischer geluid en een aantal post rock composities zet de groep onder leiding van Hollis en zijn sidekick Frise-Greene een uitgebalanceerd geluid neer en, ondanks dat men mag spreken van een overgangsplaat, een 'stand-alone' plaat.
Van de drumbeat-start tot de wegstervende fluittonen word je getrakteerd op muziek die op een aantal nummers nog duidelijk de voorganger raakt en waar de ruimtelijker tracks als April 5th en Chameleon Day een voorbode zijn van het geluid van de opvolger.

De elektronica heeft goeddeels plaatsgemaakt voor gitaar, piano en orgel. De groep laat zich aanvullen met een flinke hoeveelheid gastmuzikanten zoals gitaristen Robbie McIntosh en David Rhodes, saxofonist David Roach en organist Steve Winwood.

Wereldplaat. Op het snijpunt van makkelijk in het gehoor en grensverleggend. Terechte winnaar.
