Mooi en ook een leuke verrassing dat Es er twee keer instaat en ook mooi (en logisch) dat Luomo van de partij is. 'Shelter' blijft een van mijn favo tracks allertijden, maar de architectonische precisie van dat hele album, in combinatie met de gladde en zalvende vocalen, blijft bijzonder. Al die noteringen voor Nightwish komen voor mij wat uit de lucht vallen, al heb ik er nooit een heel album van beluisterd.

Ah, een match

Was even bang dat het niet meer op hield met al die metal, maar dan krijg je ineens 2 mooie platen voor je kiezen.

Van Luomo heb ik er 1 nog hoger en ook 1 van dezelfde artiest onder dezelfde naam.
Van Paavoharju heb ik een soloplaat van Joose Keskitalo ook nog hoger.
Voor mij wel de 2 beste Finse artiesten, veruit. Samen hadden ze ook wel een top 20 kunnen vullen.

En kijk eens! Wat zijn we toch eensgezind. Wel raar en gek en suf dat hun beste album lager staat dan de recentere albums. Alhoewel, misschien is dat zo vreemd nog niet.

Wat een vreemde juxtapositie: beter vs recenter.
De oudere albums hebben zeker hun momenten, maar ik durf te beweren dat het compositorisch beter en constanter wordt naarmate de tijd voortschrijdt.
Afwijkende mening, ik weet het.

Oceanborn kreeg ook 5 stemmen, maar de stemmen voor dit album liggen nog net iets hoger. Had een tijdje uitzicht op de 1e plaats maar op het einde kwamen er nog veel stemmen binnen voor de nummer 2.

Dat is toch niet vreemd? Daarbij, gezien de uitslag hier is jouw mening allesbehalve afwijkend. Op ratingsites echter weer wel. Productioneel is 'Oceanborn' natuurlijk geen schim van die latere albums, maar dat album spreekt mij veel meer aan. Komt wellicht ook omdat dat album destijds als een bom insloeg. Was mijn album van het jaar en ik vond het daarna alleen maar minder worden. Nog steeds goed (behalve 'Once'), maar minder (pakkend en meer "bedacht" en "gelikter"). Beetje hetzelfde euvel als met Within Temptation, alleen in mindere mate want gelukkig niet zo poppy geworden als Sharon & Co. Zo vind ik 'Imaginaerum' juist weer opvallend sterk. Ach ja, smaak.

Ik ben inderdaad aangenaam verrast door de uitslag

Wheel ken ik niet, dat moet ik maar eens gaan checken!

ik heb inmiddels wel twee fijne acts gezien. Luomo - ander album - en Paavoharju - idem.

we waren zelfs met zijn drietjes die deze geweldige plaat hebben genomineerd! Jammer dat het archief van de site waar ik voor schrijf/schreef plat ligt, anders had ik een linkje geplaatst van het concertverslag van Kimmo's optreden in de 013 uit die tijd. Ik vond dat zo'n surrealistische earopener: uit je plaat gaan van een dude met een accordeon. Machtig prachtig!

In de breedte is Finland misschien niet zó’n overweldigend fantastisch metalland als buurlanden Zweden en Noorwegen, maar in de diepte zeker net zo boeiend. Aangezien metal daar het populairste genre is – en gewoon in de hitlijsten staat, zoals het hoort – was het wederom een heel gepuzzel met tal van favorieten (alleen al van de band Circle zou ik met gemak een complete Top 20 kunnen maken, maar uiteindelijk schitteren ze door afwezigheid). Ook een paar bands (opnieuw) ontmoet waar ik nog niet zo veel aandacht aan had geschonken, zoals Throes Of Dawn. Dat deze band niet veel bekender is dan dat het is, is weer een van die vele onverklaarbare mysteries. Hun laatste album is helemaal een natte droom voor Pink Floyd-fans, maar dit onderstaande album toont ook nog ballen die een Katatonia zo nadrukkelijk ontbeert. Deze band neem ik volgend jaar mee in de Progladder: ik wil ook eens met een nominatie in de finale staan. En toch haalde de band mijn Top 20 niet eens, nouja zeg! Komt ook omdat het land een aantal fabuleuze folkbands bergt die zich her en der in mijn lijst hebben verstopt tussen de metalbands.
