Super dat jullie het topic levend hebben gehouden. We gaan gewoon lekker verder waar we gebleven waren, en dat wil in dit geval zeggen: iedere dag een nieuwe song + het klassement gaat weer opgepakt worden. Dat klassement is natuurlijk gewoon om het resultaat van jullie inspanningen inzichtelijk te maken; of een song op plek 6 of 600 staat maakt verder vrij weinig uit.

Ik ben gestopt met MusicMeter bij Johnny Jordaan (niet gerelateerd aan het stoppen trouwens, die arme Johnny) in februari en vanaf daar pakken we het klassement op want tot en met daar heb ik het bijgehouden. Dat betekent ook dat de nummering vanaf daar weer wordt opgepakt.

Een sabbatical heeft me goed gedaan en ik ben na mijn afscheid op MusicMeter in februari van dit jaar weer helemaal terug. Zaterdag heb ik de KO Happy Birthday Billboard Hot 100 gestart en nu ben ik weer herenigd met mijn Oldies but Goodies topic (topic? baby? beide?).

In de tussentijd heb ik een nieuwe werkplek, ik ben getrouwd, en ik spendeer grote delen van het jaar in Ecuador. Laat ik om dit topic weer op te pakken, meteen de link naar dit prachtige land leggen.

We gaan verder waar we gebleven waren:

350. Polibio Mayorga y su Quinteto Casino - Cumbia Triste (1967)




Polibio was accordeonist, keyboardspeler en componist met één missie: traditionele Ecuadoriaanse muziek vernieuwen. Dat hij in die missie geslaagd is, is een understatement. Zijn Cumbia Triste uit 1967 was ronduit baanbrekend en behoort tot een belangrijk deel van Ecuadoraanse cultuur. Het opende de deur voor de Ecuadoraanse Cumbia, uniek door de chicha sound of Andean sound en daarmee onderscheidend van bijvoorbeeld de oudere Colombiaanse Cumbia.

Waar Polibio in het begin nog uitgelachen werd door muzikanten uit het grote Quito en Guayaquil (want ja, deze man komt uit Ambato, die kunnen we toch niet serieus gaan nemen?), slikten diezelfde critici hun woorden snel in nadat duidelijk werd welke impact Polibio op het muzikale landschap van Ecuador had.

Polibio was een meester in het combineren van traditionele Andine melodieën (zoals pasillos, yaravíes en sanjuanitos) met tropical rhythms zoals de cumbia. Hij introduceerde zelfs elektronische instrumenten, waaronder het Hammond-orgel en later een Moog-synthesizer, wat nog later baanbrekend bleek in Ecuadoriaanse muziek.

Dit nummer hoor ik hier in Quito vrijwel dagelijks voorbij komen op de radio, in restaurants en in clubs. Jong en oud lijkt dol te zijn op het nummer. Hoe zit dat bij ons?

Welkom terug, Shaky. En wat een life-changing jaar heb jij achter de rug. Gefeliciteerd met je nieuwe vrouw, je nieuwe baan en je nieuwe leven in een ander werelddeel.
That reminds me, ik moet ook nog achterstallig werk wegwerken uit datzelfde continent. Volgende keer is jouw land aan de beurt.

Ik kan hier wel naar luisteren, en ook naar kijken, maar het is me allemaal toch iets te traditioneel en folkloristisch voor mijn smaak. De kreetjes en geschreeuw op de achtergrond en de ruwe, bijna lompe productie (dat percussiewerk klinkt nog rauwer dan lo-fi blackmetal ) bevallen me nog het beste.

351. Blue Öyster Cult - Hot Rails to Hell (1973)



(Don't Fear) The Reaper was in de 70s de enige single (van de 16 die er werden uitgebracht) waar deze band uit Long Island succes mee wist te behalen. Begin 80s zou er een nummer 1-hit op de US Rock chart gescoord worden, maar wij gaan juist terug naar het begin van de mannen.

Hun album Tyranny and Mutation uit 1973 kwam niet verder dan plek 122 op de album chart, maar krijgt 4,5* (uit 5) van zowel AllMusic als The Rolling Stone Album Guide. De Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal heeft een 8 (uit 10) over voor dit album dat in de 70s nog door sommigen bekritiseerd werd als "crass Satan-speed-and-sadism".

Wij gaan luisteren naar de enige single van dat album.

Boeit me ook net niet genoeg. Alleen dat gitaareffectje na 4 minuten dat maakt het nog net aardig: 6,8

Dat is ook toevallig. Ik had het twee uurtjes geleden nog over deze band, omdat een collega van mij een shirt van Ghost aanhad.
Geef mij maar deze veteranen.
Okay, van de ene kant "crass Satan-speed-and-sadism", maar van de andere kant werd het ook wel "intellectuele heavy metal" of "the thinking man's heavy metal" genoemd. Songtechnisch en tekstueel vond men het allemaal wat doordachter en gelaagder dan de andere (weinige) metalbands die er in die tijd rondzwierven.

De band heeft ruim 4500 concerten gegeven (en bestaat nog steeds, maar het einde is wrs in zicht), maar is in haar 55-jarig bestaan slechts zes keer in Nederland geweest. Een keer heb ik ze gezien en dat was op het Arrow Rock Festival in 2004 (dat was toen voor het eerst sinds 1978 (!) dat ze weer in Nederland waren). Ik kan me er nog vaagjes van herinneren dat ik lichtelijk teleurgesteld over het optreden was, omdat het nogal een timide en braaf optreden was. Ik zie nu op Setlist.fm dat ze dit nummer niet hebben gespeeld: dat zou het optreden zeker veel goed hebben gedaan.

Want een heerlijk logge metalriff met lekker veel energie in het hogere (hardrock)tempo in de bridge en de refreinen. Heel gevarieerd nummer met vooral ook gaaf drumwerk. Een van BÖC's tofste nummers. En dat gitaareffect waar Wendy het over heeft: waar kennen we dat van? Wipe Out? Surfin' Bird? Dick Dale? Ik kom er even niet op, maar misschien is het ook wel vaker gedaan.
Niet geheel verrassend wijk ik enigszins af van de cijfers.
