En ook Sigur beklom het podium en deed stapjes terug, de laatste klim was een beste, maar leidde net niet tot een coup.

In 1998 startte de band met de opvolger van Von en verlaat de ambient om meer de post-rock op te zoeken, in hun geval ook wel omschreven als 'intense droomrock'. Ze deed dit met de nieuwe toetsenist Kjartan "Kjarri" Sveinsson (die eerst als sessiemuzikant begon).

Ofschoon ze een strak tijdplan hadden moesten ze daar vanaf stappen, enerzijds vanwege de te slechte conditie van Stúdíó Núlist, anderzijds omdat de band het proces anders aanvloog: ze begonnen met de basis, eerst de opname van drums en bas. Daarna werden er arrangementen overheen geplaatst. De band maakte ook gebruik van samples, van hun eigen nummers weliswaar.
Het eerste nummer dat opgenomen werd, was Ágætis Byrjun, ofwel 'goede start'.
Jón Þór Birgisson (Jónsi) maakte bij de opnamen voor het eerst gebruik van een strijkstok op zijn gitaar.

In kleine proporties vind ik dit best mooi.

Dat is toch wel een verrassing, deze had ik stijf op plek 1 verwacht. Bloedmooi album, voor mij hun beste. Heb hem zelf op plek 4.

Jaja weer een soevereine.

De bittere wereld van The Ideal Crash is niet rooskleurig, liefde is er een ziekte en een aftakelingsproces.

Geïnspireerd door het veelvuldig luisteren naar Elliott Smith startte dEUS in gewijzigde samenstelling (Danny Mommens voor Stef Kamil Carlens) in Spanje met het maken van hun derde kindje onder de leiding van David Bottrill.

De plaat werd uiteindelijk werd in studio's in Londen, Brussel en Ronda opgenomen.

Waar de groep op hun toppen van hun kunnen opereerde, met grootse, soms zeer theatrale optredens, kakte buiten Europa kakte de carrière van dEUS een beetje in; lovende reviews, maar een US release voor The iDEAL cash kregen ze niet meer voor elkaar. Barman's mentale toestand in 1998, beschreven in Let's See Who Goes Down First hielp daar geen lieve moedertje aan.

Niet de beste dEUS, maar wel een erg goeie. Alweer.
