Nas, Testament en Deftones zijn de belangrijke nieuwkomers. Waarvan de eerste het hoogst binnenkomt. Hij past niet geheel in de rest van de lijst, maar dat album heeft mij echt verrast en verdiend de plek zeker. Testament wist mij ook te verrassen door nog eens sterk ten gehore te komen. Slayer begint hier toch terrein te verliezen. En Megadeth (de derde van de Trash ontdekkingen dit jaar) is vooral een net niet / net wel gevalletje. Ondertussen komt dit decennia de Grunge opzetten en die verstevigen hun positie met de komst van Alice in Chains dit jaar. Maar over het verloop van de afgelopen edities zakken ze steeds meer naar onder.

Er is veel goede muziek gemaakt. Maar ik heb hier eenzelfde uitdaging als bij de 80s, om die echte parels er eens uit te vissen. De afgelopen edities zit daar weinig schot in.

Op RYM was de hype al een tijdje gaande, maar ook hier is Fishmans doorgedrongen tot de populairdere platen. In 2017 was ene Benos de enige die Fishmans genoemd heeft in al die jaren. En nu 'opeens' door vijf mensen de bovenste 50 in gestemd. Ongetwijfeld met groeipotentie. Verder zien we wat ex-top 40 platen terug, waarbij A Tribe Called Quest het meest in het oog springt, omdat die de laatste jaren daar ver van verwijderd was. Het scheelde dit jaar weinig. Maar fans van ATCQ kunnen nog hoop houden verklap ik alvast.

Fishmans had eigenlijk ook in mijn lijstje moeten staan. Ik kwam er vandaag achter dat er nog geen sterretjes stonden en overwoog nog even om mijn lijst aan te passen, maar “dat zou toch geen zin hebben”. Oeps.

Ook al twee keer Slowdive En ook daarvoor mag er boos mijn richting worden gekeken, want ik had alleen Just for a Day, die dan vermoedelijk (net) buiten de top-50 geëindigd is.

EDIT: En als we dan toch bezig zijn: ik heb Midnight Marauders (zo uit mijn hoofd) lager dan ooit gezet.

De enige echte Fishmans staat op 50!

Eigenlijk had ik Fishmans - 98.12.28 男達の別れ (1999) op 1 staan, dan heb je bijna het gehele geniale oeuvre van Fishmans (+ 15 minuten extra Long Season), maar een stiekeme switch gedaan toen ik zag dat mensen de tijd nog nodig te hebben om dit laatste live album voor de dood van Shinji Sato te ontdekken.

Ik heb me altijd wat verbaasd over de enorme populariteit van deze plaat hier op de site, maar tot dit jaar scoorde Jeff Buckley altijd steady top 20. Vorige editie haalde Grace zelfs de hoogste positie ooit. Dat volgt hij dus op met by far de slechtste prestatie ooit.

De tussenstanden vertekenen bij deze plaat altijd, omdat ik de spellingscorrecties vaak achteraf pas toepas en dan blijkt dat velen deze plaat lastig vinden om te spellen, met name de hoeveelheid puntjes. Daar kan Excel niet zo goed mee omgaan, helaas. Afijn, opvallend genoeg geen enkele keer in iemands top 5, maar wel een keurige plek 31.
