Wel erg ontgoochelend dat mijn nummer 1 het weer niet haalt. Diamond Life vind ik een van de hoogtepunten van de jaren '80. Dit is al het zesde jaar op rij dat de "winnaar" niet in mijn top 20 staat. Net als vorige week heb ik slechts vier treffers. En ja, West, ik had al op Paolo Conte gestemd, maar dat heeft dus ook niks uitgehaald.

1985: Er is weer eens een elfstedentocht, Evert van Benthem wint. In Rusland overlijdt partijleider Tsjernenko, Gorbatsjov volgt hem op. Veel onlusten en rellen (en zwarte doden) in Zuid-Afrika leiden tot het uitroepen van de noodtoestand en economische sancties door US en UK. Live Aid wordt gehouden n.a.v. de hongersnood in Ethiopie. De eerste pin-betaling in Nederland vindt plaats.

Marillion startte goed, startte nog beter door en leek de nummer 3 te blijven. De laatste dag werd er nog een inhaalslag gemaakt door twee albums.

Misplaced Childhood was Marillion's eerste conceptalbum met twee doorlopende muziekstukken op beide kanten. De band kon via dit concept diens vaardigheden tonen in toegankelijke rock-ballads Kayleigh en Lavender, tezamen met materiaal met donkerder thema's als drugmisbruik (Blind Curve), alcoholisme (Waterhole) en prostitutie (Bitter Suite) uiteindelijk leidend tot wedergeboorte en verlossing. Het concept kwam tot Fish tijdens een langdurige acid-trip.

"I was in 'Padres Bay' when suddenly I felt a child standing behind me on the stairs. I knew he was dressed as a soldier and vanished as soon as he entered the corner or my eye. Perhaps it was my muse; perhaps it was the drug. It was enough to propel me into reaming off a large scrawl of prose."

Verschillende nummers hebben autobiografische aspecten. Kayleigh verwijst naar verbroken relaties in zijn algemeen en naar die van Fish en 'Kay Lee' in het bijzonder. Heart of Lothian ("I was born with the heart of Lothian") verwijst naar Fish' jeugd in Midlothian en het thema 'jeugd' wordt verder uitgewerkt in Lavender, dat deels is gebaseerd op de traditional "Lavender Blue".

Maar ik hou hier gewoon niet van.

Uit de top 10 heb ik nog nooit van Dead Can Dance gehoord. Ik was dat jaar dan wel 7 jaar, maar met wat ik ondertussen muzikaal al heb ingehaald, zou ik de groep toch tegengekomen zijn denk je. En weer die Marillion. Nooit echt de liefde voor deze band begrepen. Even snel gekeken op Wikipedia waar vooral blijkt dat de band veel populairder was in Nederland dan in Vlaanderen.

Een zeer stabiele nummer 7. Eromheen gebeurde wel wat, maar The Triffids bleven stoïcijns.

The Triffids waren een Australische band, ontstaan midden jaren 70 rond zanger, songsmid en multi-instrumentalist David McComb. Na jarenlang Australië te hebben rondgereisd en de kleine 4000 km tussen Perth (west) en Sydney (oost) vele keren te hebben afgelegd, verkaste de band medio 1984 naar Londen.
De tweede helft van de 80's waren ze hier te lande tamelijk populair en deden Torhout-Werchter, Pinkpop, Waterpop en Parkpop aan. 1989 splitte de band en David McComb deed er jaren over om met het door hem nagestreefde solo-album te komen. Dit kwam door zijn slechte gezondheid, alcoholisme en heroïnegebruik had o.a. zijn hartfunctie sterk aangetast en in 1996 onderging hij een succesvolle harttransplantatie. Hierna echter bleef hij zijn ongezonde levensstijl aanhouden en na een auto ongeluk in 1999 stierf hij.

"When we finished Born Sandy Devotional I knew it was the best thing we’d ever done, there was no question about it. The writing was much more autobiographical than anything I’d done before, I felt quite close to the subject matter. I found myself almost following the idea of fidelity as a complete all-consuming faith, to give you some sort of direction or something.

And ‘Born Sandy Devotional’? It was the name of a song which didn’t make it onto the record which is about someone called Sandy… I like titles like those, they’re just a law unto themselves and they have a feeling unto themselves.

Born Sandy Devotional is the culmination of our efforts trying to capture our more considered lyrical approach with a physical intensity… well not really, but that will have to do."

Gelouterd album, de steun hier voor de plaat verbaast me eens te meer, omdat ik het er totaal niet in hoor. De stijl ligt me niet, het geluid nog minder en de composities overtuigen me niet.
