Een paar vergeten, zoals Vic Chesnutt, die ik (te laat) als tip kreeg. AF achteraf te veel eer. Indrukwekkend hoe zaaf elke keer weer de albums (die toch vaak zijn smaak niet zijn) aan elkaar oudehoert. De rest bedankt voor enkele interessante lijstjes. Dat wordt weer luisteren voor 2008, als ik er maar geen radiohoofd van krijg.

Deed het goed, steeg naar nummer 2 en werd voorbijgepoeft door de bebaarde barden. Dat liet men niet op zich zitten en met een uitgekookt sprintje werd Elbow met banddikte 2e.

Weer een highschoolverhaal als start, wordt daar nog wat gestudeerd? Guy Garvey was 16 toen hij Mark Potter trof die ook studeerde aan het Bury College in Bury, Greater Manchester. Potter speelde al in een band met drummer Richard Jupp en bassist Pete Turner en zocht een zanger.
De vier noemden zich Mr. Soft, later gewoon Soft (...). Dat was het moment voor broer Craig Potter om zich aan te sluiten en voor Soft toetsen te gaan toevoegen.

In 1997 werd de naam veranderd in Elbow, want: in The SInging Detective sprak Philip Marlow zich uit over dat woord als zijnde 'the loveliest word in the English language'.

Na het winnen van een talentenjacht tekende de groep voor Island en nam met producer Steve Osborne hun debuut op in de Real World Studios. Maar... Island werd overgenomen door Universal en contracten werden massaal ontbonden, zo ook dat met Elbow en de plaat werd niet uitgebracht.

Onder een nieuw contract, met independent label Ugly Man Records werd een aantal EP's opgenomen: The Noisebox EP, The Newborn EP en The Any Day Now EP, die allen aanzienlijke airplay kregen op BBC Radio 1.

Uiteindelijk werd dan toch Elbow's debuutalbum gemaakt en uitgebracht, Asleep In The Back, bestaande uit onder andere 6 opnieuw opgenomen tracks van de Real World Studios sessions.

Goh… ik vind Radiohead al zulke sociaal wenselijke muziek, Guy en consorten overtreffen dat met speels gemak. Die eerste plaat bevat zeker nog aardige nummers, deze raakt me niet.
