Startte randje top 10, maar net toen ik me begon te verbazen dreunde U2 door naar het podium om daar geen afscheid meer van te nemen.
Na de support die U2 ten deel viel na The Joshua Tree woei de kritiek na Rattle and Hum uit een andere hoek. Hun exploratie van vroege Amerikaanse muziek werd als pretentieus weggezet en zelfs als zelfgenoegzaam.
De groep zelf ervoer hun succes als teveel, of zoals drummer Larry uitdrukte: "We were the biggest, but we weren't the best." Ze geraakten het steeds spelen van hun Greatest Hits beu en tobden met de verwachtingen van het publiek en diens interpretatie van hun samenwerking met B.B. King (alsof ze deze artiest weer even in het zonnetje wilden zetten).
Na de Lovetown Tour namen ze een uitgebreide time-out.
Daarna gingen Bono en The Edge wat tijd samen doorbrengen om nieuw materiaal te vervaardigen. De nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de muziek, de dance en de Madchesterbeweging met name, lieten ze puzzelen over een koers die in deze stroomversnelling zou kunnen fitten.
Hiertoe werden Lanois en Eno weer uit de kast getrokken, met Lanois als leading producer en Flood als engineer. Eno kroop wat meer op de groep als criticus en ideeënman. Hij, Eno dus, was af en aan aanwezig, steeds alles ‘wissend’ wat teveel als U2 klonk. Door steeds afstand te nemen hoopte hij dat de groep een frisse eigen koers zou ontwikkelen.
Opnamesessies in Berlijn gaven de groep een moderne, Europese impuls, waarna de klus in Dublin werd geklaard.
"Buzzwords on this record were trashy, throwaway, dark, sexy, and industrial (all good) and earnest, polite, sweet, righteous, rockist and linear (all bad). It was good if a song took you on a journey or made you think your hifi was broken, bad if it reminded you of recording studios or U2. Sly Stone, T. Rex, Scott Walker, My Bloody Valentine, KMFDM, the Young Gods, Alan Vega, Al Green, and Insekt were all in favour. And Berlin ... became a conceptual backdrop for the record. The Berlin of the Thirties—decadent, sexual and dark—resonating against the Berlin of the Nineties—reborn, chaotic and optimistic..."

Na de eerste lijstjes moest Nirvana Slint nog voor zich dulden, maar daar was eenvoudig mee af te rekenen. Verder onbedreigd, de ganse woche.
Eind ’89 liet Cobain optekenen: "The early songs were really angry... But as time goes on the songs are getting poppier and poppier as I get happier and happier. The songs are now about conflicts in relationships, emotional things with other human beings"
Dat gezegd hebbende maakte Nirvana zich begin 1990 op om werk te maken van hun tweede album, voorlopig Sheep geheten. Op voordracht van Bruce Pavitt, hoofd van hun label Sub Pop, gingen ze in zee met Butch Vig. Dat stond hen wel aan, want Vig deed o.a. de productie van de noiserockers Killdozer en ze wilden hun album net zo vet laten klinken als dat werk.
In april gingen ze de studio van Vig in (Smart Studio in Madison) en namen daar in rap tempo 8 songs op: Immodium (later Breed), Dive (later het B-kantje van Sliver), In Bloom, Pay to Play (met volledig aangepaste tekst werd dat later Stay Away), Sappy, Lithium, Here She Comes Now (uitgebracht op VU-tribute album Heaven and Hell Volume 1) en Polly. Ze wilden in die flow meer songs opnemen, maar Cobain had zijn stembanden flink geforceerd op Lithium. Pauze dus en Vig werd gezegd dat ze elkaar nog wel zouden zien.
In die pauze ging Nirvana met de gemaakte tape leuren om een betere platendeal te scoren. Op advies van Kim Gordon werd dat hetzelfde Geffen sublabel als waar Sonic Youth voor had getekend, DGC.
Intussen was er ook een kwestie ontstaan met drummer Channing. De andere twee waren niet content met zijn ontwikkeling in het nieuwe proces en Channing op zijn beurt voelde zich buiten de songwriting gehouden. Dus stapte hij op. Na wat uitprobeersels werd september 1990 hun aandacht door vriend van Cobain en Melvins-lid Buzz Osborne op Dave Grohl gevestigd. Deze zocht een band na het uiteenvallen van zijn punkband Scream.
Na het verder ontwikkelen van de songs en het integreren van Grohl kon de groep weer verder en werd door DGC luxe aangeboden: een andere, betere studio, een andere, beroemdere producer. En men koos weliswaar voor de betere studio: Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Los Angeles maar wilden graag de klus klaren met Butch Vig.
Voorjaar 1991 werd Nevermind vervaardigd in de stijl van: niet teveel takes van dezelfde song achter elkaar, om fris te blijven. Maar aangezien ze de songs goed hadden voorbereid, ging het werk voorspoedig. Alleen de teksten van Cobain liepen wat achter op schema, ook omdat hij geneigd was teksten die hij al veelvuldig had gezongen weer te veranderen. Zo heeft hij de break-up met vriendinnetje Tobi Vail een aantal malen in zijn teksten meegenomen. Haar deo “Teen Spirit” leidde tot een muurgrafitti van haar vriendin in de slaapkamer van Cobain: “Kurt smells like teen spirit”...
Aan het eind van de rit waren band en producer nog niet 100% blij met de eindmixing. Overleg met DGC gaf een lijst waar ze de onderste van pakten om niet met een te groot ego te worden belast; dat was Andy Wallace, die met Slayer had gewerkt. Zijn werk werd door eenieder na voltooiing zeer gewaardeerd (hoewel er na het grote succes weer op werd afgegeven als zijnde te glad).
Mokerveel gedraaid, maar nog steeds een lekkere plaat hoor. Vooral in de auto.

Eind ’89 liet Cobain optekenen: "The early songs were really angry... But as time goes on the songs are getting poppier and poppier as I get happier and happier. The songs are now about conflicts in relationships, emotional things with other human beings"
