Derin en deruit voor Underworld gedurende de week. De grens werd steeds opgezocht en overschreden.

In de flow van Dubnobass werd gewerkt aan Second Toughest, wat anders verliep dan de titel zou doen vermoeden: geïnspireerd en harmonieus.

Het album opent met het uit drie dooreenlopende secties bestaand nummer (een suite zogezegd) Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream of Love, het dooreen lopen is de verklaring voor de dubbele punten ipv streepjes.
De loungy, drum and bass track Banstyle volgt, halverwege overgenomen door de half-speed tegenhanger Sappy's Curry. De rest van de plaat laat de progressie horen in het Underworld geluid: de clubnummers Pearl's Girl en Rowla versus Blueski en Stagger met respectievelijk ingemixte live-gitaar en melancholische arrangementen. Pear's Girl is een van de weinige Underworld songs met gebruik van breakbeats.
Door het succes van single Born Slippy.NUXX werd de re-issue van Second Toughest aangevuld met bonus-disk waarop deze track en live favoriet Rez.

De songtitels Sappy's Curry, Pearl's Girl en Born Slippy zijn windhondennamen van de nummers 3, 2 en 1 van een door de groep bezochte race.

Volgens AllMusic:  "It carries the same knockout punch of their debut, Dubnobasswithmyheadman, but it's subtler and more varied, offering proof that the outfit is one of the leading dance collectives of the mid-'90s."

Ook zo'n veelgedraaid album in deze jaren… En gezien mijn nr 1 positie mag het een blijvertje genoemd worden.

Vallen en opstaan voor Placebo, startte goed, viel uit de top 10, klom er weer in, viel er weer uit en na een stevig herstel zakten ze op het eind weer twee plaatsjes.

Hoewel Brian Molko en Stefan Olsdal beiden op the American International School in Luxembourg hadden gezeten, ontmoetten ze elkaar pas in Londen, 1994. Molko trad daar op in een kroegje en hij zag Olsdal onderweg in de metro met een gitaarkoffer (deze had zojuist een gitaarles gevolgd) en nodigde deze uit. Dat optreden vond Olsdal indrukwekkend en wilde graag met Molko een band starten. Dat werd Ashtray Heart, naar een song van Beefheart.

Ze hadden wat moeilijkheden bij het vinden van een drummer: de drummer die Molko kende, Steve Hewitt, had verplichtingen en kon alleen helpen met hun demo’s. Eind ’94 vonden ze Robert Schultzberg. Met hem werd de naam gewijzigd en hun debuutplaat opgenomen. Molko en Schulzberg echter lagen vaak met elkaar in de clinch, exit Schulberg dus. En Hewitt werd zijn vaste vervanger.
Placebo’s ster rees snel, de glamrock connotatie door de muziek en vooral het uiterlijk van Molko gaf ze veel aandacht en de groep speelde begin ’96 al als voorprogramma van Bowie bij zijn concerten in Italië (Outside-toer) en mochten ze zijn 50e verjaardagsfeest in New York opluisteren.
Op de singleversie van de voorloper van hun volgende plaat Without You I'm Nothing zingt Bowie zelfs een duet met Molko.

De sessies voor deze opvolger verliepen niet zonder slag of stoot, want Molko had het moeilijk met de producer, Steve Osborne. Er was een beetje uit armoe voor hem gekozen, omdat ze weliswaar een producer wilden die ervaring had zowel met rock als in de dance en er op dat moment niet veel opties beschikbaar waren. Het uiteindelijke opnameresultaat vond Molko wat overgeproduceerd en het bevatte wat teveel langzame songs naar zijn zin voor een tweede album…

De plaat is in drie maanden tijd opgenomen in Real World Studios in Wiltshire met als gitarist degene die de gitaarpartij had bedacht – hetzij Olsdal hetzij Molko. Molko zingt een stuk lager, hij was zijn knijpstem (eigen woorden) moe.
Later werd het door Phil Vinall geproduceerde Pure Morning, bedoeld als B-kantje, aan de plaat toegevoegd.

Lang niet beluisterd deze. Wist me nooit compleet te overtuigen hoewel ik Pure Morning een erg mooi nummer vind. Ik zal hem weer uit de kast halen…

In geen velden of wegen, na een lijstje of 10, maar kwamen daarna rap opzetten: halverwege op plek 13 - na driekwart op plek 7 en zie hier. Wel top 10 voorspeld, maar een stuk lager.

Matthew Bellamy begon met het schrijven van nieuwe nummers tijdens de Showbiz-toer in 2000. Sommige songs ontwikkelden zich ook tijdens die toer door delen ervan tijdens live improvisaties te spelen. Ook werden complete nummers gespeeld zoals Plug In Baby en Razor Blades (later Screenager genoemd).
De nummers New Born, Plug In Baby, Bliss and Policing The Jackson Funk (later Darkshines) werden nog tijdens de toer opgenomen met hulp van producer David Bottrill. Dit gebeurde in de Ridge Farm Studio's in Surrey. De keuze voor Bottrill was niet uit onvrede met Showbiz-producer John Leckie; op dat moment was Leckie niet beschikbaar. Na afloop van de toer was Muse echter niet tevreden met de mixing en liet John Cornfield een nieuwe master maken.

Tegen het einde van het jaar ging Muse aan het werk voor het resterende deel van het nieuwe album en ditmaal met Leckie, omdat Bottrill naar de Verenigde Staten was vertrokken voor productiewerk met Tool. Het album werd uiteindelijk hoofdzakelijk in twee studio's opgenomen: naast de Ridge Farm Studios was dat Real World Studio in Wiltshire.
Additionele opnamen vonden plaats in de Astoria Studios in Richmond, de Sawmills Studio in Cornwall en de Abbey Road Studios in Londen. De orgelpartij op Megalomania werd opgenomen in de St. Mary's Church in Bathwick.

In december waren er 16 nummers geschreven. Eén daarvan heette Tesseract (later Futurism). Ook ging de band aan de slag met Feeling Good, een musicalnummer van Leslie Bricusse en Anthony Newley en uitgevoerd door onder andere Nina Simone. Bellamy vond dat wel lekker passen bij de rest van de tracklist.

Alle nummers werden gemixt in de Sawmills Studio's. Na afronding van het album volgde de mastering in de Sony Music Studio's in Londen.

Nee, die is ook niks voor mij. Bombast met hysterie, 't is me wat teveel voor een heel album.
