Keihard uit de startblokken en tot halverwege soeverein op 1. Toen kwam er een plaatje langszij en die bezweek niet meer.

Springsteen begon aan dit album te werken na afloop van de tournee rond zijn vorige album, The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle. Hiervoor werd drummer Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez uit de band gezet en werd vervangen door Ernest Carter. Carter bleef niet lang in de band, hij is enkel te horen op het titelnummer van het album. Hij verliet in 1974 de band samen met toetsenist David Sancious, die een eigen platencontract had getekend. Springsteen moest vervolgens op zoek naar een nieuwe drummer én een nieuwe toetsenist. Deze vond hij in respectievelijk Max Weinberg en Roy Bittan. Sindsdien zijn zij vaste leden van The E Street Band.

Bruce heeft de nummers geschreven op piano - niet op gitaar. Er was een flink budget voor het opnemen van deze plaat, als laatste poging van Bruce en de platenmaatschappij om eruit te halen wat erin zit. Het duurde uiteindelijk meer dan 14 maanden om de plaat op te nemen, waarvan alleen al zes maanden voor de titelsong. Springsteen kwam vast te zitten in het opnameproces. Hij hoorde in zijn hoofd hoe het moest klinken, maar wist dat niet over te brengen op de anderen, inclusief producer Mike Appel. Hij heeft later gezegd dat hij Born to Run wilde laten klinken als "Roy Orbison singing Bob Dylan, produced by Phil Spector."
Springsteen deed uiteindelijk een beroep op Jon Landau om te helpen met de productie. Dit was het begin van het einde van de samenwerking van Springsteen met producer én manager Mike Appel.

Toen het album eenmaal uitkwam, werd Born to Run een dikke doorbraakhit. Het katapulteerde Springsteen van een lokale muzikant naar een nationale en internationale ster.

Tja, Bruce en zaaf… Niet zo'n gelukkig huwelijk… Soms een nummertje dat ik goed kan waarderen, de hele rit vind ik al snel teveel van het goede. En de optredens dus al helemaal

Wat mij betreft de mooist Floyd (en dus ook eindelijk in mijn lijstje).

Ook deze na de eerste lijstjes nauwelijks vermeld, toen een klapper waarmee hij naar de top van de lijst steeg en vervolgens podium af en podium weer op.

Zoals in 1975 geschreven, Bruce kreeg wat trammelant met zijn oude manager Mike Appel. Dat en de druk die het succes van Born To Run gaf, leidde tot een langere periode voor het verschijnen van een nieuwe, meer introspectieve plaat.

De band ging ook anders te werk: wanneer Springsteen een nummer had geschreven, nam men dit groepsgewijs op, met een nadrukkelijke rol voor Steven Van Zandt die zich samen met Springsteen met de arrangementen bemoeide.
De formule was echter hetzelfde: de plaatkanten starten met een knaller en emotioneel eindigen.

Tijdens de Darkness sessies werden ook nummers geschreven en soms opgenomen die niet op de plaat belandden, dit om de cohesie te bewaren. Ook al betekende dat wellicht dat er minder hitpotentie op de plaat kwam te staan.
Onder die nummers zaten Because the Night, bekend geworden door Patti Smith, Fire, idem door Pointer Sisters, Rendezvous (Greg Kihn), This Little Girl (Gary U.S. Bonds) en een aantal voor Southside Johnny & the Ashbury Jukes. Ook werden een paar nummers doorgeschoven naar het volgende studio album van Springsteen zelve, nl Independence Day, Point Blank, The Ties That Bind en Sherry Darling.

Dit vind ik wel ruimschoots Bruce's beste. Vroeger vrij veel gedraaid, maar nu heb ik er niet zoveel meer mee. Ik houd niet van zijn brul.
