10. The Good People - Good for Nuthin' (hip hop)
Muziek hoeft niet ingewikkeld of vernieuwend te zijn. Dat is wat The Good People hier laten zien. Old skool boom bap hiphop die keihard uit je speakers knalt. Probeer hier maar eens bij stil te blijven zitten.

09. Bat for Lashes - Lost Girls (synthpop)
Met een 80s sound zit je meestal goed bij mij, en dus raakte ik dan ook verslingerd aan deze synthpopplaat van Bat For Lashes. Het is overduidelijk waar ze de mosterd haalt, maar dat maakt deze plaat zeker geen saaie herhalingsoefening. Onweerstaanbare melodieën worden uit de synthesizer getrokken en er wordt gestrooid met hooks, zoals het een goede popplaat betaamd.

08. Damien Jurado - In the Shape of a Storm (folk)
Door zijn vorige twee platen werd ik fan, maar voor zijn nieuwe plaat gooide hij het roer om. De vele instrumenten werden de deur uitgegooid en wat restte was alleen de akoestische gitaar. Geschreven tijdens het touren en eigenlijk uitgebracht als een soort tussendoortje. Maar Damien Jurado laat zien dat hij niet meer nodig heeft dan zijn stem en een gitaar. Met deze plaat laat hij zien bij de allergrootste singer-songwriters te horen.

07. Thom Yorke - ANIMA (ambient pop)
Zonder zijn bandmaten van Radiohead worden de gitaren overboord gegooid en duikt Thom Yorke volledig de electronica in. Verder gaan waar Kid A ophield als het ware. Hij neemt je mee in een trip vol stuwende bassen en synths die je kippenvel bezorgen. Gecombineerd met die fantastische stem levert dat mijn favoriete elektronische plaat op.

06. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana (gangsta rap/hip hop)
Madlib heeft zijn sporen allang verdiend en laat hier horen waarom. Veel afwisseling in zijn producties, die vaak soulful en jazzy zijn. Dit past uitermate goed bij de rauwe rap van Freddie Gibbs, die constant varieert met zijn flow. De nummers worden aan elkaar gelijmd met korte radio skits en mede daardoor luistert de plaat ontzettend goed weg.

05. Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs (folk)
Een album dat zo in de 60s of 70s gemaakt had kunnen zijn. Sfeervolle folk die als een warme deken over je heen valt. Jessica Pratt zingt met een prachtige, karakteristieke heliumstem, die enigszins doet denken aan Kate Bush. Sprookjesachtige plaat die perfect is voor de lange, donkere avonden van deze tijd van het jaar.

04. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains (alt-country/indie rock)
Purple Mountains is het soloproject van David Berman (van de band Silver Jews). Na een lange stilte kwam hij met deze comeback plaat, die lovende recensies oogstte. Veelal vrolijke melodieën contrasteren mooi met de zwaarmoedige lyrics en zorgen voor een hoop memorabele songs. Helaas bleken die lyrics een voorbode voor het droevige nieuws dat David Berman, vrij vlak na de release, zelfmoord had gepleegd. Dat maakt de lyrics natuurlijk nog droeviger. Een indrukwekkende zwanenzang helaas.

03. Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka (psychedelic soul)
Ooit maakte ik kennis met Michael Kiwanuka door de cheesy radiohit Home Again. Toen had ik niet gedacht dat hij later zo goed zou worden. Op de vorige plaat Love & Hate werd Danger Mouse als producer aangesteld en die tilde hem naar grote hoogten. Soul met een Pink Floyd sausje erover heen, een onweerstaanbare combi. Die sound word op Kiwanuka doorontwikkeld en resulteert in zijn beste plaat tot nu toe.

02. Aldous Harding - Designer (folk)
Haar optreden in de Paradiso was een muzikaal hoogtepunt en ook haar art performance was om van te smullen. Dat heeft deze plaat uiteindelijk alleen nog maar mooier gemaakt. Haar eigenaardige verschijning staat in schril contract met de harmonieuze en makkelijk in het oor liggende liedjes op Designer. Vorig jaar stond haar ex Marlon Williams bij mij op 1 en dit jaar doet zij dat hem bijna na. We kunnen stellen dat de folk scene in Nieuw-Zeeland vrij hot is momenteel.

01. Julia Jacklin - Crushing (folk/indie rock)
Niet de meest baanbrekende of vernieuwende plaat van het jaar. Maar dat is ook niet nodig als je zulke mooie nummers schrijft. Een breakup plaat vol rake teksten. De muzikale omlijsting is ook erg fraai. Sobere, gevoelige nummers worden afgewisseld met steviger gitaarwerk. Julia Jacklin heeft een stem waar ik helemaal verliefd op ben geworden. Een stem die soms bijna overslaat van emotie. Voor mij is deze pure plaat de mooiste van 2019.

Ik weet nog niet of ik dit jaar een lijstje inlever, want ik heb maar erg weinig actuele releases écht beluisterd. Nieuwe muziek is voor mij overigens "gewoon" alle muziek die ik nu pas hoor, of het nou een cantate van Bach betreft die ik nog niet kende of een dit jaar uitgekomen album in het segment "pop".
Het belang van lijstjes vind ik ook niet groot. Bovenstaande titels kwamen dit jaar uit en troffen mij - en dat is alles.

De rock is in de loop van de jaren '10 wel weggeëbd ten faveure van de solo-artiesten (singer-songwriters). Natuurlijk hoop ik nog meer prima albums uit 2019 te horen.

Sinds ik in 2004 startte met het maken van een jaarlijkse album top 10 is Bruce Springsteen overigens diegene die er het vaakst in voorkwam, in 5 van de 16 top tiens stond hij met een album! In 2012 werd hij 1 met Wrecking Ball. De nummer 1 van vorig jaar (Evolution), dat is Disturbed, haalden de Top 10 4x. Er zijn 6 bands, die 3 keer in de TOP 10 stonden. Tool is de nu de enige band, die 2 keer op 1 stond, het waren overigens ook hun enige 2 albums in die periode!

James Blake - Barefoot In The Park (feat. ROSALÍA)

Behoorlijk muziekjaar verder, minder hiphop dat eruit springt en met Lana echt met speels gemak het beste album van het jaar, zelfs top 3 van dit decennium voor mij. Wat een ongelooflijk fijne plaat om heerlijk te luisteren met werkelijk geen één zwak nummer en een paar pure parels ertussen (Mariners Apartment Complex was al uit 2018, anders was dat ook eenvoudigweg de Song van het Jaar geweest.
