85 albums uit het lopende jaar beluisterd: 62 albums, 13 EP's, 6x verzamelaars, 3x live en 1 score.

Vooral genoten van nieuw werk van: Lauren Ruth Ward / Wilsen / Then Comes Silence / The Strokes / Jackie Lynn / Lewsberg en de laatste week van Malena Zavala en Lido Pimienta. Ook petje af voor de Laibach verzamelaar met prachtige bewerkingen van hun oude werk.

Veel acts stellen hun nieuwe albums uit tot augustus, dat lijkt me niet slim maar vanuit de gedachte om tournee en release aan elkaar te koppelen ook geen raar idee. Alleen als iedereen het doet dan krijgt elk album minder tijd om fans voor zich te winnen, en dus verkleint hun kansen om in de top van eindlijstjes te geraken. Zal me niets verbazen als de album top 10 van 2020 gedomineerd gaat worden door releases die voor de zomer zijn uitgebracht.

Auktyon - Mechty
Op MusicMeter niet zo bekend, maar Auktyon is regelmatig bejubeld als de beste Russische rockband. Op dit album is het weer raak. Wederom een genre-overschrijdend geheel van (post)Rock, Jazz en Folk. Soms melancholisch, soms snijdend, een ademend geheel!

Błoto - Erozje
Interessante, volledig instrumentale release van Poolse bodem. Een fundatie van Jazz gefuseerd met hiphop beats. Ontstaan uit het Poolse Jazz collectief AEBS, die hun schouders niet ophalen voor experimentatie.

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
MUSIC NEVER SOUNDED QUITE LIKE THIS is een overstatement, maar Madame Apple levert weer een sterk staaltje singer/songwriter-schap af. Eigenzinnige percussies, twist and turns op bijna elk nummer en meeslepende teksten.

Lido Pimienta - Miss Colombia
Op dit album kijkt deze up-and-coming artieste met een introspectieve blik terug naar haar Colombiaanse roots. Traditionele ritmes en instrumentatie (zoals de Cumbia) worden in een modern electronisch jasje gestoken. (Haast Björk-esque te noemen zelfs)

Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi
Een krachtpatser van deze Finse metalband. Passages van psychedelische kalmte moeiteloos afgewisseld met hypnotiserende ritmes en ongenadig rauwe riffs. Het gehele album kent een sterk mysterieuze flow.

Pink Siifu - Negro
Een intense luisterbeurt. Hiphop meets noise, heel veel noise. Een aanklacht tegen het gestructureerde racisme, aangezet door muren van herrie. Je moet er van houden, maar door de korte speelduur en de flinke variatie tussen de nummers, werkt het voor mij.

Quelle Chris & Chris Keys - Innocent Country 2
Projecten waar Quelle Chris bij betrokken is, zijn altijd overladen met karakter. Zo ook deze. Sterke features op een zeer consistent album. De productie is laid-back, maar kent een flinke dosis soul.

Sunwatchers - Oh Yeah?
Deze volledig instrumentale band combineert stevige psychedelische rock met jazz-composities. De saxofoon speelt een centrale rol in de muziek van Sunwatchers en geeft hun werk een continue voortdreunende drive.

Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind
Genre-wijs is deze artiest lastig in een hokje te plaatsen. Zijn nieuwste album put inspiratie uit de glam rock. Zijn toegankelijkste werk tot nu toe, maar onder het oppervlak schuilt nog genoeg eigenzinnige invalshoeken die Yves Tumor tot zo’n intrigerende artiest maken.

Zopp - Zopp
Twee mannen met een voorliefde voor de Canterbury Scene van de jaren ’70, maar dit album is een mixed bag van verschillende stijlen, zo passeren de nodige synth-bliepjes ook de revue. Een album gevuld met creatieve uitbarstingen.

Verder nog kleine shoutout naar DJ Python - Mas Amable, Jackie Lynn - Jacqueline, Laura Marling - Song for Our Daughter , Moor Jewelry - True Opera en Kim Myhr & Australian Art Orchestra - Vesper

Geweldige, melancholische new wave/synthpop uit New York met bijzondere zang. Denk New Order + Matt Berninger (The National).

2. Les Amazones D’Afrique - Amazones Power
Verrassende plaat van het West-Afrikaanse vrouwencollectief. Fijne Afrikaanse klanken met een rauw randje met dank aan een dosis elektronica.

3. Caribou - Suddenly
Fijne popplaat van Caribou die af en toe buiten de lijntjes kleurt en vol met mooie details zit.

4. Yves Tumor - Heaven To A Tortured Mind
Yves Tumor is hier een rockster, maar dan wel op z’n eigen voorwaarden. Even melodieus en catchy als onvoorspelbaar en vreemd.

5. Islandman - Kaybola
Fijne, subtiele elektronische muziek vermengd met traditionele instrumenten uit Turkije.

6. Obongyajar - Which Way Is Forward?
Eerste (net niet) langspeler van Obongyajar uit London. Originele mengelmoes van afrobeat, soul en een snufje elektronica.

7. Holy Fuck - Deleter
Stekelige en dansbare plaat van deze vakmannen, met post-punk invloeden.

8. Ozferti - Solarius Gamma
Onstuimige en funky beats van deze Franse producer met Ethiopische gast muzikanten en vocalisten.

9. Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
Niet zo goed als de voorgangers maar toch weer vindingrijke popliedjes. Gewoon lekker.

10. Other Lives - For Their Love
Nieuwe lading bombastische indie folk. Hun meest consistente tot nu toe.
