Currently on a six-week tour opening for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, James McMurtry took a moment to deliver the “State of the Union”. The story introduces as to a family at political, cultural, and spiritual odds with one another. The characters seated at the table are part of a national and global problem as governments seek to divide rather than unite their citizens, finding it easier to hide lies when everyone is bickering with one another.

Of “State of the Union”, James McMurtry explains ‘every region of the United States seems to have its own way of Anglicizing, or rather, Americanizing Spanish names. There’s a town called Palacios on the Texas coast. Texans pronounce it ‘Palashuss,’ which just happens to kinda rhyme with ‘fascist.’ While there’s usually at least one in every town, I don’t know for a fact that there’s even one actual fascist residing in or near the town of Palacios, Texas. This song, like most of my songs, is a work of fiction. Any resemblance of any of my characters to actual persons, living or deceased, is just plain lucky’.

Maar met dit nummer bewijst hij een echte zoon te zijn van Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson & Jamey Johnson. Zeker geen onbekende namen in de Americana. Pure klasse!!! Dit niveau had ik niet verwacht!



En ... voor de KARAOKE versie moet je hier zijn ...

Ook deze vijfde bijdrage bevestigt mijn indruk dat er nog altijd behoorlijk wat ontbreekt aan de singer-songwriter kwaliteiten van Waylon.

Ik was behoorlijk sceptisch over zijn deelname aan de Eurovisie - alleen zijn “Outlaw in ‘em” overrompelde me en heeft de kwaliteit om hem naar zo’n internationaal podium te sturen - maar dit vijfde nummer bevestigt mijn eerste indruk. Met zulk middelmatig materiaal heeft dit halftalent daar weinig te zoeken.

Gênant was het incestueuze karakter dat DWDD na dit optreden kreeg. Na het geplug van dhr. Van Nieuwkerk, maar dat zijn we van hem gewend, besloot Gerard Joling Waylon al uit te roepen tot de potentiële winnaar van het ESF. Wat moet je met de lof van iemand die daar zelf al een keer afging ? Nederland heeft er, zoals we weten, een handje van om zichzelf al als kampioen uit te roepen voordat de wedstrijd gespeeld is.

Opvallend was dat daarna ook Youp van ‘t Hek en de voormalige televisiecritici van De Volkskrant (Jean-Pierre Geelen) en het NRC (Hans Beerenkamp) zich bij deze nationale polonaise onder leiding van de heren Van Nieuwkerk en Joling aansloten. Van hen mocht je toch aannemen dat ze enig cultureel benul hebben?

Of realiseerden ze zich dat er in DWDD altijd alleen maar plaats is voor ja-knikkers en waren ze bang door een kritische opmerking een volgende uitnodiging mis te lopen - & wie wil er nou geen € 1.250 - voor een paar keer ja knikken? bron: ene Peter R de Vries, beroep: misdaadverslaggever.

Waylon met dit nummer naar het songfestival sturen? De titel van dit laatste nummer is in ieder geval toepasselijk:
Zo te horen kan Waylon nog wel een lesje ‘songwriting’ gebruiken!!!

Ronduit gênant is de ‘free publicity’ waarmee deze artiest een week lang zijn nieuwe album mag promoten. Bij de redactie van DWDD denken ze natuurlijk ‘zo lang het Commissariaat voor de Media ons niet op onze vingers tikt kunnen we ongestoord onze gang gaan’.. Maar voor Warner Bross Nederland is het de ultieme marketingkans. Zo breng je een middelmatig album van een dito artiest gratis aan de man/vrouw.

Extra pijnlijk is het dat andere artiesten die muzikaal meer te bieden hebben worden afgescheept met een minuutje airplay. Dat heb ik bij Letterman / Leno en Colbert / Fallon nog nooit gezien.

Tim Hardin overleed in december 1980 op 39-jarige leeftijd. Ik persoonlijk vind zijn zangstem en composities mij meer aanspreken dan bijvoorbeeld Bob Dylan. Maar smaken verschillen en gelukkig ook de muziek.

Hele fijne muziek dit. Mooie mix van roots, blues, country en folk. Zeker het luisteren waard voor de liefhebbers.

Ooit nog live gezien in de Willem Twee in Den Bosch, geweldig artiest inderdaad.

Je hebt ‘songwriters’ en je hebt verhalenvertellers, en Steve Earle vertelt overduidelijk verhalen. Zijn liedjes, zoals 'The Devil's Right Hand', 'Copperhead Road' en 'Guitar Town', stonden op de setlist van artiesten als Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill en Patty Loveless. Om maar een paar bekende namen te noemen.

Steve's inspiratie kwam van twee andere verhalenvertellers: Townes Van Zandt en Guy Clark. In 2009 bracht Steve Earle zijn album ‘TOWNES’ uit, zijn eerbetoon aan Towns Van Zandt. En nu, 10 jaar later, eert hij zijn andere muzikale held, Guy Clark, met het album ‘GUY’ dat eind maart, de 29e, verschijnt.

Op het album spelen Steve Earle & The Dukes 16 nummers van de grote Nashville-via-Houston-artiest. Vandaag plaatste New West als teaser de eerste track ‘Dublin Blues’ van dat nieuwe album op YouTube. (Voorlopig helaas alleen voor de Amerikaanse markt).

Het NPR programma "Áll Songs Considered" sprak met Steve over dit album en over zijn relatie met Guy Clark.
