Hierbij het resultaat van een poging om een representatievere MusicMeter Top 250-lijst te maken, waarbij niet kwantiteit bepalend is maar de verhouding tussen kwantiteit (aantal stemmen) en kwaliteit (stemgemiddeldes en top-10 opnames).

De volgende factoren wegen mee:
* het stemgemiddelde (gekozen wegingsfactor: 4)
* verdeeldheid van de meningen / verhouding laagstemmers (gebruikmakend van standaardafwijking, wegingsfactor: 1)
* aantal top-10 noteringen ten opzichte van aantal stemmen (wegingsfactor: 2)
* top 250 notering (wegingsfactor: 1)
* gemiddelde positie dat het album in de top-10's staat (wegingsfactor: 1)
* populariteit (absoluut aantal behaalde stemmen, wegingsfactor: 1).

Ik had 500 gegadigde albums geselecteerd, namelijk:
* alle albums uit de Top-250
* plus alle albums met meer dan 400 stemmen
* plus alle albums met een gemiddelde van tenminste 4,0* en minimaal 350 stemmen tellend.

Tussen haakjes vooraan staat de positie volgens de 'echte' Top-250.

Een aantal dingen die me opvielen:
- Leonard Cohen als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer op nummer 83
- Radiohead (Ok Computer), Coldplay (A Rush of Blood) en Pearl Jam (Ten) die fors zakken, dat ze op veel lijstjes voorkomen impliceert kennelijk niet dat ze ook echt favoriet zijn!
- The Chameleons - Script of the Bridge heeft slechts 291 stemmen, een hoog gemiddelde en maar liefst 58 top-lijst noteringen. Gestegen dus van 217 naar 97. Kennelijk een destijds tamelijk onbekend album dat nu door MusicMeter ontdekt is.

Als ik het goed zie:
waarbij niet kwantiteit bepalend is maar de verhouding tussen kwantiteit (aantal stemmen) en kwaliteit (stemgemiddeldes en top-10 opnames).

Het stemgemiddelde weeg je wel heel erg mee, getuige de stijging van Neil Young naar de top 10 opeens.

Ik ben wel benieuwd wat je berekeningen dan precies zijn.

Ja, het aantal stemmen mag best wat meer meewegen. OK Computer heeft dan wel een iets minder gemiddelde t.o.v. bijvoorbeeld Pink Floyd. Maar wel ruim en dan ook heel erg ruim de meeste stemmen van alle albums. En dat moet meer meewegen.

Ik heb ook een alternatieve top 100 gemaakt, waarbij ik alleen de stemmen heb meegenomen. De top 10 lijstjes worden namelijk niet door alle gebruikers ingevuld. Bij de lijst heb ik rekening gehouden met:
- (A) het stemgemiddelde (basisscore)
- (N) het aantal stemmen (logaritmische bonus, hoe meer stemmen hoe meer punten; bij minder dan 100 stemmen worden er punten in mindering gebracht)
- (V) de variantie van de stemmen (lineaire bonus, hoge varianties duiden op veel 'proteststemmers', die vaak het gemiddelde naar beneden trekken; hoe hoger de variantie hoe meer bonus)

De totale score (T) wordt berekend met:
T = A + 0.5*log10(N/100) + 0.5*V
Voor een betere vergelijking worden alle waardes geindexeerd, waarbij de nummer een 100 punten krijgt.

De weegfactoren zijn experimenteel bepaald. Een album met twee keer zoveel stemmen krijgt 0.15 bonus op het totaal. De variantie van stemmen ligt tussen 1.03 (OK Computer) en 0.56 (Live at Massey Hall 1971), bij een gemiddelde van 0.746 (voor albums uit mijn top 100). Bij 3 sigma afwijking is de bonus 0.15. Over de exacte getallen valt natuurlijk te discussieren.

Er steken drie albums boven de rest uit die onderling weinig verschillen: Radiohead staat op nummer 2 met OK Computer, omringd door twee platen van Pink Floyd. Radiohead heeft dan wel een lager gemiddelde, maar ook veel meer stemmen en veel proteststemmen die het gemiddelde onderuit trekken.

Enkele andere highlights zijn:
- belangrijke stijger: Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971, 214 -->30
- belangrijke daler: Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head, 5 --> 36
- hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere: 75
- hoogste uit lijst verdwenen nummer: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication 26-->103

Graag hoor ik jullie mening over deze alternatieve top 100.

Heel mooie lijst Equinox. Dat ziet er al veel beter uit dan mijn eerste poging. Ook met een stuk meer talent voor statistiek gedaan zo te zien. Ik vermoed dat beide andere reactiegevers zich er ook beter in kunnen vinden. Ben wel nieuwsgierig voor welke set albums je dit hebt berekend. En wat betreft top10-lijsten wel of niet meenemen; voor beide is denk ik wel iets te zeggen.

Ok Computer lijdt denk ik aan het syndroom dat veel mensen wel eens willen weten wat nu dit nummer-1 album is. Daardoor komt het album hoger in je lijst. Maar het zakt weer net zo hard doordat er ook veel mensen zijn wiens straatje het niet lijkt te zijn (hogere standaardafwijking). Het lijkt erop dat jij die balans beter hebt gevonden dan ik.
Alleen heb ik nog wel mijn twijfels bij live-albums. Het stemgemiddelde is daar zo een paar tienden hoger omdat de verhouding gerichte liefhebbers (van de artiest) hoger is dan bij gewone albums. Dat zal bij het live-album van Nirvana wel meevallen, maar ik stel me voor dat Live at Massey Hall 1971 van Neil Young in verhouding veel stemmen van Neil Young-liefhebbers geplaatst zijn (iets wat wellicht te verifiëren is.)

Ik ben eigenlijk wel benieuwd naar je gehele Top-250 Equinox. En dan bijvoorbeeld op basis van alle albums met meer dan 250 stemmen... maar dat zal wel een te hels karwei worden. Hopelijk komt er ooit een soort van MuMe SQL-tool om dit soort dingen wat makkelijker te maken.

Volgens mijn bescheiden mening is zo'n lijst de belangrijkste die je wilt zien op deze site, en ook een beter visitekaartje dan een optelsom van top-10 lijsten, wat meer bij lijsten zoals de rotatielijst hoort.

Bedankt voor de complimenten BrotherJohn. Mijn voorselectie aan albums is:
- alle albums uit de huidige top 250
- de beste platen per decennium
- platen met een hoog stemgemiddelde (groter dan 4) en een redelijk aantal stemmen (tussen 200 en 1000).
- andere albums van artiesten met hoogscorende platen. Dit zijn voornamelijk platen van Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Drake, Bowie, enz.
Verder zijn heb ik albums toegevoegd die ik dacht dat hoog zouden scoren. Dit bleek echter niet altijd het geval.

Live albums zijn lastiger te beoordelen. Er is vaak een kleine groep fanatieke fans die op de plaat zal stemmen. Hierdoor valt het gemiddelde vaak hoog uit. Maar aan de andere kant is het aantal stemmen vaak lager dan bij een studioalbum (minder bonus). Bovendien is de variantie lager: Neil Young (Live at Massey Hall 1971) heeft een standaarddeviatie van 0.56. Deze is veel lager dan het gemiddelde (0.741, uit de top 130). Met mijn rekensleutel is de aftrek 0.09 op de totaalscore (ten opzichte van een gemiddeld album).

Met mijn huidige weegfactoren wegen stemmen aanzienlijk mee. Bob Dylan (The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert) met het verbluffende gemiddelde van 4.43 bij slechts 140 stemmen (variantie 0.55) scoort (slechts) een index van 88.2. Dit is waarschijnlijk niet voldoende voor een plek bij de beste 200 albums, maar het is wel een van de hoogstgenoteerde platen met minder dan 200 stemmen.

Bij het uitbreiden van mijn lijst kwam ik tot te conclusie dat enkele albums vergeten zijn (verzamelalbums neem ik niet mee). Lou Reed (Berlin) is op 93 de hoogst genoteerde plaat die ik vergeten was. Daarom alsnog de beste 130 albums (index ~ >90). Veel langer zal ik de lijst waarschijnlijk niet maken. Het is namelijk veel werk en en het is foutgevoelig, omdat er geen complete lijsten beschikbaar zijn met gemiddelde, aantal stemmen en variantie. Misschien is het een idee om deze beschikbaar te maken voor gebruikers.

Andere sites, zoals Rate Your Music, gebruiken nog complexere sleutels voor het maken van een toplijst. De huidige top 250 bij MusicMeter vind ik niet representatief genoeg als toplijst. Vandaar mijn poging...

- De live albums van Porcupine Tree (Anesthetize) en Opeth (In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall) hebben nog geen 100 stemmen.

De vraag die je moet stellen, is denk ik: gaat de toplijst over de beste (TOP) albums of de meest populaire albums? In hoeverre wordt er rekening gehouden met populariteit (aantal stemmen)?

Zo lijkt het me fair dat een album met 3000 stemmen boven een album met 442 stemmen komt. Hier komt de kwestie live-album weer kijken, want ik verwacht dat alleen Young-liefhebbers zo'n album opzoeken. Ik denk dat je ook makkelijk aan een gemiddelde van 4,51 kan komen door 442 Coldplay-liefhebbers te zoeken binnen die 3000 stemmen.

Dat kan je dan ook opzoeken, en dit haalt het inderdaad makkelijk:




In ieder geval al 1000 stemmen aan 4,5* en 5* stemmen, dit is dan al veel meer als dat Neil Young-album.

Chevy, de insteek van dit topic is een combinatie van populair en hoog gemiddelde. Volgens mij heeft Equinox het aantal stemmen al mee laten wegen in zijn formule. Misschien kan hij het nog iets meer laten meewegen. Maar even los van dat het in dit geval een live-album betreft, ik vind het niet zo gek dat een album met 442 stemmen en een gemiddelde van 4,51 boven een album met 2943 stemmen en een gemiddelde van 3,91 terecht kan komen. Zes tiende verschil in stemgemiddelde is een zéér fors verschil. Ik vind het niet zo gek dat een "best wel goed, zeer populair album" (Coldplay) even hoog staat als een "zeer goed maar slechts redelijk populair" album. Het nadeel van de MusicMeter Top250 vind ik is dat er te veel "redelijk goed, zeer populair" in staat, te weinig "zeer goed slechts redelijk populair". De huidige MusicMeter Top250, dus voornamelijk gebaseerd op populariteit, is meer een boegbeelden-lijst die je in een encyclopedie kunt opzoeken, dan een zich onderscheidende lijst met albums die door het bezoekende publiek zeer gewaardeerd worden. Of met andere woorden: wil je stapels geld laten zien, of bijzondere diamanten?

Mijn punt is gewoon dat als hetzelfde publiek dat 3000 keer op Coldplay gestemd heeft op Neil Young gaat stemmen, het gemiddelde van Neil Young ook geen 4,5* meer is, maar ook meer richting de 3,91 (en ws. zelfs lager). Zoals ik al zei kan je ook 500 Coldplay-fans vinden die het album gezamenlijk een 4,5* stemmen (zie plaatje van Snoeperd). Op dezelfde manier als 500 Neil Young-fans het gemiddelde van Live at Massey Hall tot 4,5* kregen.

Waarom zou je dan verzamelaars weigeren? Die zijn bijna net zo fangericht als live-albums.

Ik ben het met je eens dat de huidige opzet van de Top 250 te veel kijkt naar naar populariteit (en hypes derhalve ook erg veel tellen), maar om je dan opeens blind te gaan staren op het gemiddelde.

Aan de hand van de discussies kom ik tot de volgende aanbevelingen:
- stemmen moeten zwaarder meewegen
- live-albums krijgen structureel een hoog gemiddelde omdat eigenlijk alleen fans stemmen
- verzamelalbums moeten ook worden opgenomen.

De sleutel tot een totaalscore (T) heb ik aangepast tot:
T = A + 1.0*log10(N/100) + 0.5*V^2
- (A) het stemgemiddelde (basisscore)
- (N) het aantal stemmen (bonus)
- (V) de variantie van de stemmen (bonus)

Het aantal stemmen weegt nu dubbel zo zwaar mee (te zwaar???). Hierdoor is het eigenlijk onmogelijk voor albums met weinig stemmen om hoog te scoren. Dit heeft ook een positief effect op de score van live-albums, omdat het aantal stemmers laag is. Een lage standaarddeviatie (<0.6) duidt op eensgezinde stemmers (vaak fans). Door het kwadraat te nemen wordt de bonus gehalveed (bij sigma = 0.5). Bij albums met een grote standaarddeviatie is het verschil minimaal. Verder heb ik verzamelalbums toegelaten.

De top 50 bij bovenstaande steutel wordt:
